My name is Seija Parnanen and I graduated in 2006 with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia Okanagan. I have always been interested in art, but it was during those four years at UBCO that I developed a passion for painting and photography.
I grew up in Gold River, a small town on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Surrounded by rugged cedar forests, flowing glacial rivers, and the deep Pacific Ocean, this community not only depends on its natural resources for economic survival, but also a survival of a way of life. I was fortunate to have been exposed to Aboriginal culture, wildlife, and, the richness of a dense coastal environment. It was not until I moved to a city that I became influenced, and moved by the connection that not only I, but humans in general have with nature. My paintings are based on places that have inspired me, experiences that have changed my life, as well as wildlife and nature, which I have always held close to me. With our high-rises, pollution and self pre-occupation, we are pushing this “other world” away. My hope is to capture what has been lost.
